donna g’s TIFF 08 Film List and Top Ten Faves

So how did I chose my Top Ten? Emotional response. There are just some films where seeing the title triggers an emotional response and instant images from the film flicker in your head. It was still hard to narrow it down to ten, and I included the short film, Jesus and the Giant in the list because it was such a great pairing with its screening buddy, Medicine for Melancholy, so I guess you could call this my Top Ten and a Half list. The only easy choice was my Number 1 pick, Ramin Bahrani's Good Bye Solo. I love understated films with brilliant performances.

I saw 30 films this year, I agree with donna g Radio Love was horrible, and Slumdog Millionaire was just there, nothing special. My favorite film was Patrick 1.5 a really smart touching film about two gay men who get a 15 year old boy instead of a baby they wanted to adopt. 35 Rhums would be my next choice, it was a beautiful film about a father and daughter and their extended family. Finally RockandRolla was just pure fun and I can't wait to see it again.

I really liked 'Slumdog Millionaire',if you go to see it stay for the credits and you will be treated to a Bollywood number.

'$5.00 a day' was with Christopher Walken was wonderful.

A great performance in 'Happy Go Lucky' by Sally Hawkins.

'Hunger' was very interesting and the lead actor certainly looked as if he was wasting away. He portrayed Bobby Sands.

Kari Skogland's film '50 Dead Men Walking' was also well done.

I really enjoyed 'It Might Get Loud' and didn't want it to end.

Guilty pleasures were: 'Chocolate' and 'Detroit Metal City'.

'JCVD' was worth a look too, a strong start but a weak ending.

Guy Ritchie's 'Rocknrolla' was a fun return to what he does best.
Hope to see more of the actor who played the druggy rocknrolla.

A strange film was 'Vinyan'. Creepy but fascinating.

I hated 'Cooper's Camera' - bad, overacting, totally unlikeable characters.

'Dioses' was well done, a comment on the diffence between the rich and poor in Peru.

I saw 19 films this year, all in all a pretty good festival for me.
